During this period, I was really into capturing these shifting, superimposed faces and bodies. Similar works include Untitled (Faces in the Mist), Twilight Hour, and Untitled (5D), among others. With this piece, I painted over something I made a few years prior. I often find that some of my best paintings are paint-overs. Even when I’m not painting-over an old piece, destruction is often a very important part of my creative process. I almost always paint in layers, constantly iterating and covering up older sections. Even if these underlayers are no longer visible, I don’t think you ever truly lose them – their ghosts haunt the painting and help guide all subsequent layering.
