At the time I made this drawing, I wanted to get better at depicting “real” things (faces, flowers, bodies, etc.). For a long time, my doodle style was pure abstract patterning, without any real recognizable forms. I’ve always been able to draw realistically from a reference – but, I struggled with making recognizable forms from memory. So, during Covid lockdowns, I began practicing new shapes and forms – I would draw hundreds of faces or body parts from references, with the goal of eventually being able to draw them from memory and integrate them into my doodling practice. However, I often find it boring to just draw a plain face/body/flower – I think it lacks creativity to just copy a reference. So, when I would practice drawing flowers, bodies, intruments, etc., I would try collaging them together into these larger, pseudo-cubist compositions. This practice helped influence how my doodle style evolved in the future. This drawing is a good, finished, example of these “practice” collages.
