This was one of the first finished artworks I made outside of a classroom setting. I originally intended to just make an abstract painting using a ragging technique (applying the paint vigourously with rags rather than carefully with brushes). But, after it was dry, I had the idea to add a dissolving face on top. I still find this process very helpful when I have creative block: when I don’t know what to paint, I just start making an improvised abstract – then, either inspiration strikes me partway and the abstract becomes a background, or I just keep developing the abstract until it can stand on its own.
