I always bring this one with me when I move – it has hung in my high school bedroom, my college dorm room, my first college house, and my first apartment. This painting started out as a waterfall. In that painting, we have a peaceful Buddha letting go and melting into a fluid universe. I wanted to create an opposing painting and hang them side-by-side as a juxtapostion. So, I decided to paint someone famously egotistical (Kanye) and have a loud, geometric, protruding background. - [RIDE (2019)](https://kellenart.com/original-artworks/2019-2/ride-2019/): This is a portrait of MC Ride I made for a drawing class in 2019. My teacher spread out a bunch of celebrity reference photos at the front of the classroom, and our assignment was to make a realistic portrait in ink. At the time, I was listening to a ton of Death Grips – so, I was very pleasantly suprised to see a photo of MC Ride on the table (awesome teacher, shoutout Tim!). I had never really done any hatching before, so it was a great learning experience.

I originally intended to just make an abstract painting using a ragging technique (applying the paint vigourously with rags rather than carefully with brushes). My workflow is very different for acrylics vs. watercolor vs. charcoal vs. ink. As a result, my style changes across different media. I try to work with the medium, letting it guide me, instead of fighting against it. Certain styles are best done in watercolor, others are best done in ink – it’s a waste of time and effort to make watercolors behave like a pen when you can just use a pen. - [Lil Guy (2019)](https://kellenart.com/original-artworks/2019-2/lil-guy-2019/): This guy is a good example of my high school doodling style – I would love to make arches, sticks, and tentacles out of repeated lines. The background was made using my first pack of high quality colored pencils (I believe they were prismacolor). Simple little guy, but I like him.

I was first introduced to the style in a drawing class; then, I watched a biopic on Picasso; then, I went deep on the work of Picasso and Braque. I thought it was such a cool art movement, and began experimenting in the style myself. This drawing is one of the earlist cubist pieces I made.

During our rounds, I would get bored during the opponents’ speeches – to help me stay awake, I would doodle on my notes sheet. This is a hand I drew in-round at one of our tournaments.

- [Self-Portrait (2019)](https://kellenart.com/original-artworks/2019-2/self-portrait-2019/): This was the first mirror portrait I’d ever done. I had drawn/painted myself using photo references before, but this was the first time I tried to work directly from a mirror.
- [Untitled (Clockwork) (2019)](https://kellenart.com/original-artworks/2019-2/untitled-clockwork-2019/): I took a drawing class in the fall of 2019, and we spent a lot of time practicing the basic forms (blocks, spheres, etc.) as well as perspective. At the same time, I was doing some research into cubism and looking at old cubist artworks. As a result, my doodling style started to shift. I began using basic structural forms, but arranged in the shattered compositions of cubist artworks. Instead of being flat and pattern-based, my doodle/drawing style became more sculptural and angular. This drawing is an early example of that doodling style.

The assignment was to make an end-of-year portfolio. I decided to collage a series of my artworks into one project. The centerpiece is an acrylic painting of David Bowie on cardboard – making this painting taught me how to paint realistic/recognizable portraits, a skill I continue to use often. Throughout 2018 and 2019 I was listening to lots of MF DOOM and had bought Madvilliany on vinyl. Around the same time, I had coincidentally picked up some canvases that were the exact same size as a vinyl record (12″ x 12″). Realizing this, I decided to use my record as an exact-scale reference image and painted the cover of Madvilliany.
