I took a 3D design class my freshman year of college. For our final project, we had to make a sculpture out of foam. I decided to make a bust using two foam blocks. Early on, I tried to use traditional sculpting tools (knife, saw, sandpaper, etc.). But, I quickly became frustrated with those tools, so I started just tearing out chunks of foam with my fingers. I really liked the effect this created, so I ended up carving the whole head with my fingernails. Once it was carved, I painted it to add some visual character.
