Ink on paper, X” x Y”, …

I made this drawing during the Covid-19 pandemic. I had been doodling in a similar style for a long time – I would “stitch” together repetitious patterns on the margins of my notebooks and assignments, filling in all the blank space with a uniform design; but, I had never used it for a finished piece. Then, I watched a documentary on Yayoi Kusama and learned about her early work: she would repeat a single pattern thousands of times, sometimes filling entire walls with a repeated pattern, and she called these patterns “infinity nets”. I saw a lot of parallels between my “stitches” and her infinity nets, so I was insipired to try making a larger, stand-alone piece out of my stitches. I had just gotten my first set of Micron pens, which had a variety of different tip sizes – so, I decided to start with the thinnest pen at the center and swap out for thicker and thicker ones as I worked my way out. This helps give added dimensionality and variation to the piece. The whole thing ended up taking 20+ hours, but it was a relaxing way to kill time in quarantine.
